Cycles & Traditions

Did you know that turkeys literally start showing up around Thanksgiving? Didn’t see them all Summer, and now they’re here everyday, looking tasty. Something makes them bolder and get quite close. The fact that culture and tradition were shaped by environmental cycles was completely lost on me as a city dweller. Maybe it didn’t help that I lived in places where that culture had been imported not in accordance with the environment, I’ve never seen wild turkeys in Utah.

Hunting

And the unusual places & times it takes you to.

IMG_0438This is the main field of our land at dusk, a great reward after hiking through rough terrain. I still find many new and interesting places in the forest.

A great day

having great fun with a great friend.

The cool thing about hunting is that failure still means you got some awesome hiking done.

That's as close as they let me get

2 hours tracking them, they were very very sneaky. Given that I was on a sloped terrain, I naturally went for high ground which was a mistake, they can fly away from you much faster going downhill.

Turkey

I trailed them for 90 minutes on the worst terrain (these bushy woods in the back), 2 missed shots & 1 lost arrow later, a clean shot was very rewarding. Turkeys are very elusive, getting within bow range is tough.

Sorry buddy

New toy :D
